Why You’ll Love Our Retreat

Some musings on why we know you’ll love our retreat.

There is a moment that happens every year at our retreat. People arrive with the pace of everyday life still in their bodies, and within a few hours something shifts. The shoulders drop, the breath deepens, the nervous system remembers how to settle. Part of it is the setting. Part of it is the people. And part of it is the atmosphere that quietly invites you to arrive as you are.

Our home in Urnäsch, Appenzell, plays a big role in this. The landscape has its own presence. Soft hills in every direction, calm forests, a stillness that meets you at the door. The house feels both spacious and holding, with places to gather and places to retreat, depending on what you need. Many people tell us that simply waking up there, looking out across the fields and breathing the early morning air, already feels like a reset.

The retreat follows a rhythm that supports this sense of ease. We offer classes each day, guided by teachers with decades of experience, but nothing is ever compulsory. You can move, rest, wander outside, join a session, or take a nap. Because there is no pressure to perform, people often end up learning and progressing more quickly. The focus is always on safety, clear communication, and healthy progression, so you can explore at your own pace and feel genuinely supported throughout.

After a day of practice, play, and exploration, the sauna becomes a gathering place. Sore muscles soften, conversations quiet down or deepen, and people unwind in a way they rarely allow themselves to at home. It is a simple ritual, but one that anchors the whole experience. Warmth, rest, connection. Your body remembers how good it feels to let go.

Meals carry the same feeling. We serve local and seasonal food prepared by someone who cooks with care, intention, and an eye for sustainability. The food is nourishing in the truest sense. It is cooked for you, not just for the retreat. Mealtimes often become their own kind of gathering, where stories flow easily and people who met only hours earlier find themselves speaking freely and comfortably.

One of the most beautiful parts of the retreat is how naturally community forms. People join us from different countries, professions, ages, and backgrounds, yet something about the shared experience brings out the best in everyone. Through practice, shared meals, sauna time, evening games, Thai massage sessions, and the gentle fatigue (yep, it will come!) that comes from a day lived fully, people begin to connect quickly and deeply. Many of the friendships formed here last for years. Some participants return again and again, two, three, even six times, and that alone says a lot.

For us, this retreat really is a labour of love. We have been creating and refining it for many years, both in Switzerland and abroad, and it still fills us with gratitude every time we return to Appenzell. It is rare to have the opportunity to offer a retreat like this in Switzerland. Each year feels meaningful. Each retreat feels like a gift (no kidding!). And each year, we listen to your feedback and adjust the details so the experience becomes smoother, richer, and more thoughtful. You shape the retreat with us.

What you feel over the course of the weekend is not accidental. It is the combination of a nurturing environment, a gentle structure, experienced teaching, good food, shared laughter, quiet moments, and a community that feels both new and strangely familiar. It is the feeling of being welcomed into something that has grown slowly, steadily, and with a lot of heart.

If you join us, you are not simply attending a retreat. You are stepping into a space designed to bring out your ease, your curiosity, your joy, and your capacity to connect,  with others, with yourself, and with the simple pleasure of being fully present.

We would love to welcome you.
